The Friendly Gecko Guesthouse is a socially responsible hostel in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. We aim to offer convenient and safe accommodation for a reasonable price. With making financial contributions and cost sharing arrangements we support the charity organization help2kids.
Since we accommodate up to 16 volunteers from help2kids, we consider ourselves to be more of a home than a hostel. We love to meet new people and travelers from all walks of life and share our daily experiences.
Stay at the Friendly Gecko and explore Dar es Salaam while contributing to the education and care of vulnerable children in Tanzania.
“If you want to stay in Dar a couple of days and connect with an interesting project, consider checking into Friendly Gecko Guesthouse, 20km north of the city centre off New Bagamoyo Rd. The guesthouse has a mixture of simple rooms in a large, private house with a garden and kitchen, and all profits go to support affiliated community programs.”

We had the extreme pleasure of staying at The Friendly Gecko. Everyone was kind, and welcoming. Our room was clean and lovely, perfect after a long journey. We were happy to read about the work that the Friendly Gecko does with the community, and would have liked to have stayed longer. I highly recommend!
I stayed at the Friendly Gecko during 2 weeks of volunteering with Help2Kids. It’s a really nice set-up and the Mama’s take good care of you. It’s an ideal place for volunteers to stay but not a 5* hotel, so the expectation has to be set correctly. For its intended purpose it’s the ideal place to stay to meet fellow volunteers, have access to the right type of support and act as a base for volunteer work.
House/hotel where you will meet young volunteers who are working with kids. We enjoyed it very much, talking with them and sharing experiences. It is a safe place to stay and close to the beach. Meals are good but simple and there is no menu to choose from.
