Our Guest House

The Friendly Gecko Guest House offers you the perfect place to explore Dar es Salaam and Tanzania.

Our Guest House is located a bit outside of the city center of Dar es Salaam in a safe and quiet neighborhood. With our large garden and community areas we offer a convienent and relaxed place to recover after a hectic and hot day in downtown Dar es Salaam, or a nice stop before heading to Kili or Zanzibar.

All rooms are fitted with mosquito nets and fans. There is also air-conditioning units in the private rooms. Drinks such as sodas, water and beer are available to purchase in the kitchen. Other extra services include the option of joining us for dinner on weeknights and purchasing WiFi internet access for a low fee.

We love bringing fellow travelers together to share their stories and experiences with one another!

We are lucky to have a nice terrace upstairs and a small patio out front for our guests to relax.  We also have a TV with DVD player and a small collection of movies that all are welcome to.  There is also a collection of books in different languages that you can swap out for new reading material or plan your travels with some of the guide books.

We want to offer you a safe and carefree environment for your exciting new experiences in Africa.

Our Guest House is located outside of down-town Dar es Salaam at the Africana District. It is very close to the well known White Sands Resort area, where the boats for tourists are heading off to Mbudya Island. We prefer to be outside of the city center as we are afforded more space, surrounded by a lot of greenery, and much less noise or smog. We are also conveniently closer to the help2kids projects and children's home.

Travelers tend to enjoy our relaxed surroundings, birds chirping in the morning, rather than the chaos of the city center after a long day's travel!

It takes usually 30 Minutes by car from the airport to our guest house (if there is no traffic jam). Follow the Old Bagamoyo Road until the first round-about in White Sands. Turn left there and after the second right into a rough road called Manyara Drive (at the sign "Viva Villa"). Our guest house is the first big white building on the left side.

If you have any difficulties to explain the directions to the taxi driver, please call our manager (see the Contact page). We may also arrange for our trusted taxi driver to pick you up from the airport or bus station for a fairer price than will be offered by a random driver (from the airport TZS 50,000 or USD 30).

Further information
Please be informed that we only accept Tanzanian Shilling and USD banknotes issued after the year 2006, as it is common practice in Tanzania.

The state run electricity supply is unfortunately not always very reliable, therefore electronic devices such as air-conditioning or TV may not be permanently available. However, there is usually always running water and our kitchen is gas operated, also with candles available in case of a power cut.
